INCIDENTS OF ABUSE MENTIONED:
  • 2004-04-11, Baghdad, Iraq
    • Unnamed detainee was captured near the Radwaniyah Palace Complex in Baghdad, the site of an insurgent ambush, on April 11, 2004. He was caught with an AK-47 and several magazines, most of which were empty. According to army officials, he was questioned and confessed that he had participated in the ambush in order to curry favor with his tribal sheikh. When he was asked to inform army officials of the sheikh's whereabouts, he refused, "stating his wife and children would be killed." He was then sent to Abu Ghraib. In an interview on June 20, 2004, the detainee alleged that "he was punched and kicked during interrogations, refused food or water for the first three to four days, and did not receive medical treatment until the four[th] day of detention." He stated that he was picked up on April 11 and taken to an unknown location for seven to eight days, then taken to a second unknown location for four days before transferring to Baghdad Central Confinement Facility (BCCF) / Abu Ghraib. He said that he was interrogated by two or three English-speaking men and one male linguist during the first two days of his detention. He alleged that he was hooded throughout this time and that he was slapped with an open hand on the back of his head during this period. He indicated that his confessed involvement in the ambush was obtained as a result of duress. Army officials noted inconsistencies in the detainee's account, in particular medical records indicating that he had been seen by a medic on April 11 and had "no signs of recent injuries to substantiate abuse" at that time.
